Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday addressed a public awareness campaign on the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, held at Rabindra Bhavan, Agartala. The programme aimed to raise consciousness among citizens of the Muslim community about the newly amended Waqf law and its significance in ensuring justice and transparency.
During his address, Dr. Saha highlighted the long-standing weaknesses of the Waqf Act of 1995, pointing out how the loopholes in the earlier version had severely affected the poor and backward sections of the Muslim population. “For years, the underprivileged Muslim community suffered due to the lack of proper protection under the old law. Many influential individuals misused their positions to take advantage of Waqf properties,” the Chief Minister said.
He further elaborated on the rampant misuse of Section 40 of the 1995 Act, which allowed certain leaders to illegally occupy valuable lands and indulge in various corrupt practices. Dr. Saha noted that numerous complaints had piled up over the years but could not be addressed due to the limitations of the previous law.
The Waqf Amendment Act 2025, he stated, has been passed with the intent of correcting these historical wrongs. “The new amendment strengthens legal safeguards, ensures transparency in Waqf property management, and empowers the genuine beneficiaries,” he said.
He also called upon members of the Muslim community to stay informed and vigilant, and to take active roles in ensuring that Waqf properties serve their intended purpose—upliftment of the needy.
The event witnessed the participation of religious leaders, legal experts, social workers and citizens who expressed appreciation for the government’s proactive steps in safeguarding community assets and rights.
