Today on 12th April 2025, Amendment Bill, 2025, which was recently introduced in the Lok Sabha. The Bill seeks to modernise the governance of Waqf properties—Islamic religious endowments—by streamlining the process of identifying waqf lands, ensuring transparency, and improving accountability in their management. However, several groups have raised concerns about potential misuse and loss of community control over these properties.
In Kailashahar, a protest march organised by the Joint Forum began from Tilabazar and was to conclude at the old SDM office. However, when the procession reached Kubjar, police intervened, halting its progress. The situation quickly escalated into a violent clash, with protesters reportedly throwing stones at the police. In response, the police resorted to tear gas and lathi charge to disperse the crowd. At least seven individuals were detained, and several people, including police personnel, were injured. Notably, police officer Debjit Das was among those hurt.
High-ranking officials, including DIG Rathiranjan Debnath and IPS Sudhambika, were seen at the site assessing the situation. Additional forces, including TSR, CRPF, and BSF, were deployed to prevent further violence. The DIG assured that peace was being restored and an investigation into the incident is ongoing. A verbal altercation was also reported between the Superintendent of Police and Congress leader Badruzzaman.
Meanwhile, a similar protest was witnessed in Sunamura, where members of the minority community took to the streets, blocking roads and raising slogans against the Waqf Amendment Bill. Protesters gathered in rows throughout the city, disrupting normal life. Police were deployed in large numbers, and authorities remained on high alert to prevent escalation.
The situation in both towns has now been brought under control, but tension remains high amid ongoing demonstrations and calls for the repeal of the Bill.
