LPG Price Hike Sparks Public Outcry and CPI(M) Protest in Agartala

Agartala, April 08, 2025:

Amidst growing concerns over rising fuel prices, the cost of domestic LPG cylinders has been hiked by ₹50 across the country, with the new prices effective from last night. In Tripura, the cost of a standard domestic LPG cylinder has increased from ₹928 to ₹978, adding further burden to households already grappling with inflation and high prices of essential commodities.

The price hike comes at a time when the prices of petrol and diesel have also shown a consistent upward trend, putting pressure on middle-class families and economically weaker sections. Many residents of Agartala expressed frustration over the sudden hike, stating that the increased cost of cooking gas will directly affect their monthly budgets and lead to higher kitchen expenses.

In response to the price hike, the CPI(M) Sadar Subdivision Committee organised a protest rally in the city on Monday. The protest began from the Sadar Subdivision Office and moved through various roads of Agartala, drawing attention from locals and passers-by. Participants held placards and raised slogans against the central government's policies, particularly its decision to revise fuel and LPG prices.

Speaking at the protest, a CPI(M) leader criticised the Centre’s economic decisions, claiming that such policies reflect a lack of concern for common citizens. “The middle class, daily wage earners, and lower-income families are suffering due to repeated price hikes. This ₹50 increase in gas cylinders is just another blow,” he stated.

The protestors also condemned the central government for pushing forward the amended Waqf Bill, arguing that it could potentially infringe upon the rights of minority communities. The CPI(M) leader linked the economic burden with political motives, accusing the government of prioritising corporate interests over public welfare.

The protest reflected wider concerns about the spiralling cost of living, with citizens calling for immediate intervention to stabilise fuel and gas prices. Many fear that such continuous hikes may trigger a broader inflationary trend, affecting everything from food items to transportation costs.

As the nation continues to deal with economic challenges, the voices from Tripura echo a growing discontent across various states, demanding relief measures and people-friendly policies from the government.
