CPIM Observes Lenin’s Birth Anniversary; Jitendra Choudhury Slams BJP’s ‘One Nation, One Vote’ Proposal
Agartala, April 22:
As the Communist Party of India (Marxist) observed the 156th birth anniversary of Russian revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin, senior party leader and opposition leader in Tripura, Shri Jitendra Choudhury, took the occasion to launch a sharp attack on the BJP-led central government and the state’s Chief Minister over the “One Nation, One Vote” proposal.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Choudhury, who is also a member of the CPI(M) Politburo, criticised the proposed legislation as a dangerous attempt to centralise power in the hands of a few. He alleged that the RSS and BJP are using the bill as a tool to undermine federalism and the diverse democratic framework of India. “It’s not about reforms. This is about consolidating political control. The BJP wants to erase the spirit of cooperative federalism,” he said.
Choudhury went on to call the bill “impractical and unconstitutional,” arguing that implementing simultaneous elections across the country disregards the regional diversity and state-specific electoral needs. “This bill cannot be passed without amending the Constitution in a way that goes against its very spirit,” he said.
Responding to recent remarks made by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who suggested that the opposition was fighting for its political survival, Choudhury shot back, stating that it is the ruling party that is resorting to undemocratic practices during elections. He questioned the fairness of the recent by-election campaigns, highlighting alleged hurdles created for opposition parties.
Describing the “One Nation, One Vote” initiative as an authoritarian blueprint, Choudhury warned that the Indian people will ultimately reject such proposals. “The BJP is misguiding the public with fancy slogans while attempting to establish a one-party rule. But the people are alert and will resist this,” he asserted.
The CPI(M)’s commemoration of Lenin’s birthday served as a backdrop to Choudhury’s critique, reinforcing the party’s ideological opposition to what it views as growing authoritarianism under the BJP regime.
