On March 28, 2025, the Tripura government took an innovative step to enhance the state's tourism potential by launching speedboat and shikara boat services from the historic Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala. Tourism Minister Shri Sushant Chowdhury inaugurated the initiative, marking a significant milestone in Tripura’s tourism development strategy. This effort aims to provide visitors with unique experiences while exploring the state’s natural and cultural heritage.
Under this project, two 20-seater speedboats have been introduced for the culturally rich and scenic Chhabimura area, while shikara boats have been deployed at Lakshminarayan Dighi, Rudrasagar, and Narkel Kunj. These vessels are not just modes of transportation but also a refined way for tourists to immerse themselves in Tripura’s hidden natural treasures and cultural landmarks. The carefully selected water bodies—ranging from serene lakes to historically significant sites—ensure that every boat ride becomes a memorable journey through Tripura’s diverse geography and heritage.
This initiative aligns with multiple developmental goals: promoting eco-tourism, creating alternative livelihood opportunities for local communities, improving tourism infrastructure, and establishing Tripura as an emerging destination on India’s tourism map. By strategically placing these boats in key locations, the state is shifting focus from urban-centric tourism models to highlighting its lesser-explored natural and cultural assets.
The project ensures easy and comfortable access to remote and picturesque locations, inviting tourists to enjoy a holistic travel experience that reflects Tripura’s commitment to sustainable tourism, cultural preservation, and economic diversification. This initiative is a crucial step in the state’s tourism strategy, paving the way for more integrated and expanded tourism plans in the future.
