Agartala, February 24: Members of the Tripura United Indigenous Regional Parties Council-Democratic (TUIRPC-D) staged a roadblock on National Highway 8 (NH8) in the Baramura Sadhupara area today, demanding the fulfilment of their 21-point charter of demands. The protest began at 6 AM, with demonstrators vowing to continue the blockade until the Tripura government addresses their grievances.
Daniel Borok, the leader of TUIRPC, highlighted that the benefits promised to surrendered militants, including members of the NLFT and TNV, under agreements with the central and state governments, remain unimplemented. Many former militants continue to face legal challenges despite their reintegration into mainstream society.
Borok emphasized the need for a permanent resolution to the issues faced by these individuals, urging the authorities to address their demands and livelihood concerns without political interference. He noted that peace in Tripura was achieved through the reintegration of these groups but lamented the lack of attention from the government towards their grievances.
The blockade underscores the growing frustration among former militants over the delay in fulfilling promises made to them. The TUIRPC has vowed to continue the protest until their demands are met, calling for immediate action from the state and central governments.
