Tripura CM Backs 'One Nation, One Election' Initiative, Cites Multiple Benefits

Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha strongly endorsed the 'One Nation, One Election' initiative during a discussion session at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan in Agartala today. Dr. Saha highlighted several advantages of implementing simultaneous elections across the country.

According to the Chief Minister, synchronizing all elections would strengthen democracy by increasing voter turnout and engagement. He emphasized that the current system of multiple elections disrupts normal life and governance, particularly affecting educational institutions that must close when used as polling stations.

"One Nation, One Election is beneficial as we need to cast our vote only once in five years, which is a relief. But if elections are held every year, common people will suffer," Dr. Saha stated.

The CM pointed out significant economic benefits of implementing simultaneous elections, noting that conducting multiple elections annually requires substantial financial resources. He also highlighted administrative challenges under the current system, including the frequent imposition of the Model Code of Conduct, which restricts government decision-making and file approvals during election periods.

Dr. Saha expressed concern about the impact on education, as teachers are routinely deployed for election duties, disrupting the academic calendar. He argued that consolidated elections would allow teachers and other government employees to perform their regular duties without frequent interruptions.

The Chief Minister also drew a contrast between the current business environment and that during previous administrations, stating that businessmen now receive respect under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, unlike during the Left Front rule when "businessmen were treated as enemies of society."

Dr. Saha mentioned that the issue was raised in Parliament in 2024, resulting in the formation of a committee to explore implementation. He reiterated that Prime Minister Modi has been advocating for this initiative to bring stability in governance.

The discussion session specifically aimed to create awareness among the business community about the potential benefits of implementing 'One Nation, One Election' across India.
