Members of the Twipra Students' Federation (TSF) staged a demonstration outside the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Thursday, demanding the adoption of Roman script for the Kokborok language. The protest, which proceeded despite lacking police permission, resulted in the detention of seven activists.
The protesters gathered outside the assembly building, raising slogans in support of their demand to implement Roman script for Kokborok, the native language of the Tripuri community. As the demonstration intensified, law enforcement intervened, citing concerns about public order disruption.
The detained protesters were subsequently taken to the Arundhuti Nagar Police Grounds. Police officials emphasized that the demonstration was conducted without proper authorization, necessitating their intervention to maintain order.
This incident represents the latest development in the long-standing debate over the choice of script for the Kokborok language. The script issue has been a point of contention in Tripura's political and cultural landscape, with various groups advocating for different scripts.
The protest highlights the continuing push by student organizations for their demands regarding the linguistic rights and cultural identity of the indigenous community in Tripura.
