Police Seize Major Drug Haul in Joint Operation Near Tripura Bridge

In a significant anti-narcotics operation on Sunday morning, police forces from the East and West districts jointly intercepted a 12-wheeler truck bearing registration number NL-01-A-0403 near the Pratapgarh Suspension Bridge. Acting on confidential intelligence, the authorities discovered a substantial quantity of Yaba tablets concealed within a cement shipment.

West Tripura Superintendent of Police (SP) Kiran Kumar K, alongside Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Debprasad Ray and their team, conducted the operation. Upon thorough inspection of the vehicle, law enforcement uncovered 12 packets containing approximately 120,000 Yaba tablets, with an estimated street value of 10 million rupees (approximately £95,000).

The truck, which originated from Meghalaya, was en route to Sonamura carrying what appeared to be a legitimate cement consignment. Two individuals were arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt: Jamal Hossein and Mintu Barman, both residents of Bishalgarh.

Speaking to reporters, SP Kiran Kumar K detailed that the operation was meticulously planned based on reliable intelligence. He emphasised the significance of this seizure in the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region. The SP confirmed that both suspects would be produced before the court, and the police would seek remand for further investigation.

This operation highlights the continuing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in the northeastern states of India, particularly regarding cross-border drug trafficking. The use of commercial vehicles and legitimate cargo as cover for drug smuggling remains a persistent concern for authorities.

The suspects will face charges under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, with police planning to investigate potential links to larger trafficking networks in the region.
