Pradesh Congress Committee has demanded justice for a father and son who were subjected to a brutal assault over a substantial Durga Puja subscription demand.
In a troubling incident that has sparked outrage in Tripura, the Pradesh Congress Committee has demanded justice for a father and son who were subjected to a brutal assault over a substantial Durga Puja subscription demand. The incident unfolded in Bishalgarh, a town located in the Sepahijala district of the state. According to a press statement released by the Bishalgarh division of the Congress, the victims, Dulal Mia and his son, were confronted by members of the Rautkhala Yuva Sanstha on October 11.
The demand placed upon them was an exorbitant sum of Rs 5 lakh as a subscription fee for Durga Puja. Dulal Mia, a local minority citizen of modest means, found it impossible to meet this financial demand. However, the situation took a grim turn due to his position as the vice-president of the Bishalgarh District Congress. The club authorities took an aggressive stance, forcibly detaining both father and son within the club premises and subjecting them to severe physical assault. Additionally, they issued threats to the Congress leader, insisting that he vacate the area if he didn't comply with their demands.
The situation escalated further when Dulal's wife attempted to intervene and secure the release of her husband and son, only to become another victim of physical assault and dire threats.
Dulal Mia is currently undergoing medical treatment at Tripura Medical College. The Bishalgarh District Congress Committee has vehemently condemned the incident, calling for a thorough investigation and the swift apprehension of the perpetrators.
The President of the Congress party has visited the victim at the hospital to express solidarity and support in the face of this unfortunate incident.
In the aftermath of this distressing episode, the Tripura Police in Bishalgarh has initiated action against another club, 'Naboday Sangha,' which stands accused of forcibly collecting Durga Puja subscriptions from various transport agencies and laden vehicles.
In an official statement, the police acknowledged receiving complaints regarding the coercive collection of Durga Puja subscriptions by the club committee. They have issued a show cause notice, demanding that the club committee explain why criminal charges should not be filed against its members and why the puja ceremony should not be halted by the competent authority.
The club committee has been instructed to provide their explanation by the stipulated deadline, with the warning that any failure to comply will result in further legal action. This incident has raised concerns about the coercive tactics employed during the festival season and the urgent need for justice to be served.
