In a significant development, the Tripura government has allocated a substantial plot of 2.36 acres to the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD) to establish a campus in the state. This move reflects the government's commitment to promoting performing arts and cultural education in the region. The future campus is slated to be located in Ranirbazar, situated in the West Tripura district.
An official memorandum of understanding (MoU) has already been signed to formalize this arrangement, underscoring the state's dedication to fostering the growth of theatre and dramatic arts.
Subir Roy, the Programme Coordinator of NSD Agartala Centre, expressed the institution's gratitude for the support received from the Tripura government. He stated, "Following NSD's request, the state government has provided a plot of 2.36 acres. An MoU was signed between the two sides on Tuesday." Roy further mentioned that the process of land mutation will be carried out before the commencement of construction for the full-fledged NSD Centre in Tripura. Currently, the NSD Centre operates from Nazrul Kalashetra.
The NSD Agartala Centre presently offers a one-year course in 'Theatre in Education,' and plans are underway to extend the duration to two years, aiming to enhance the quality and scope of theatre education in the region. Currently, the centre has 20 students enrolled in this course, with expectations of more students benefiting from the expanded program in the future. This move not only provides aspiring artists with better opportunities but also contributes to the enrichment of the cultural landscape in Tripura.
